Prevent Swine Flu

Feel like you are starting to get sick? Worried it might be the H1N1 flu virus? Try these methods of early prevention. They might just save your life:

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official
communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show
characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has
Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

The Hip Homemaker suggests you pass this on to your entire e-list, Facebook, Twitter fans, etc by clicking on the "share" button below. You never know 20 who might pay attention to it - and STAY ALIVE because of it.

According to a study from Great Britain, kids with stay-at-home moms are healthier. Moms who work, according to the study published in the Baltimore Sun, are more likely to drink sugary drinks, walk to school less often and stay on the computer or television for longer hours.

Is this true for you? Are you a working mom? Do you fear your kids don't get out enough and have developed bad habits because you aren't at home more often? She was recently interviewed by CNN's Clyde Anderson about her work as well. Be sure to catch her incredible makeover show LX NY on NBC this Sept 14th and another monster makeover for Open House NYC on Sept 20th.

More about Courtney Cachet and her work

Fruit Roll-ups in the Parking Lot

Remember when we posted about baking cookies in your car? Here's something else you can try on your dashboard - dried fruit (who knew they were going to be such handy easy-bake ovens?).

How to Make Dried Fruit in Your Car:

1. Just take any fruit, clean it and slice it up first
2. Take a box or tray and place the fruit slices flat so it can dry properly
3. Leave on the dashboard of your car for a day or two until the fruit fully dries.

Bonus benefits - Costs $0 compared to buying a food dehydrator, protected by your car so bugs and birds won't eat the fruit, you can savor the summer flavor all year long.

We found a poor little broken hummingbird outside Hip at Home headquarters. The Hip Homemaker did a little research to figure out how to feed it. Apparently it's just 1 part sugar and 4 parts water mixed. The little guy still hasn't really moved, but has fed from our mixture.
